mitochondria and its function

Mitochondria are organelles found in most eukaryotic cells, which are responsible for producing energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) through the process of cellular respiration.

The main function of mitochondria is to convert the energy stored in nutrients into a usable form for the cell. This process occurs through a series of biochemical reactions, collectively known as the citric acid cycle or Krebs cycle, which takes place in the mitochondria's inner membrane.

In addition to their role in energy production, mitochondria also play a vital role in other cellular processes, such as the regulation of cell signaling, cell growth and differentiation, and the maintenance of calcium homeostasis.


mitochondria also contain their own DNA and replicate independently of the cell's nucleus, suggesting that they may have evolved from free-living bacteria that were engulfed by ancestral eukaryotic cells in a process called endosymbiosis.
